Powell organizations give dinners to needy

Thursday, December 6, 2007

ThisWeek Staff Writer

Volunteers working to raise money to donate turkey dinners to needy families around Delaware County (from left) Kroger deli manager Bob Stagger, Bob Sokol from the Olentangy Rotary Club, Cathy Harper Lee from the Kiwanis Club of Powell and Larry Coolidge from Powell Sertoma Club, gathered last week at the Kroger Market Place on Sawmill Road. The groups hope to donate at least 50 turkey dinners this Christmas.

Three Powell philanthropic organizations have joined forces to make the holidays a little brighter for dozens of families in Delaware County.

The Olentangy Rotary Club, the Kiwanis Club of Powell and the Powell Sertoma Club are working together for the third year in a row to raise money for turkey dinners.

"At the end of this year, the clubs will have donated 300 dinners to area families in three years," said Larry Coolidge, a member of Powell Sertoma.

Coolidge is spearheading the fund-raising effort and will help organize volunteers to deliver the turkey dinners Dec. 24.

"By the end of this year, we will have raised $10,000 over the last three years for dinners for needy families," he said.

The three organizations gave away 50 dinners at Thanksgiving and Coolidge said they hope to donate at least 50 this Christmas. The more the merrier, he said.

"There are more than enough needy families in Delaware County," Coolidge said. "We work with some churches and the Delaware County Prosecutor's Office and different organizations" around the county who help the families.

"It's a full dinner, it includes the turkey, the pie, the rolls, everything needed for a nice holiday meal."

For more information or to donate money to help purchase turkey dinners, contact Coolidge at (614) 436-2000.

Those wishing to donate may make out a check to any of the three clubs, Sertoma, Kiwanis or Rotary, and mail it to Coolidge at 78 W. Olentangy St., Powell 43065.
